What commonly goes wrong on this engine

  • ·N47 timing-chain wear (a widely documented issue on 2007–2014 builds) can raise oil consumption; the extra oil ash loads the DPF faster than normal and cleaning without addressing it invites early re-blocking.
  • ·EGR-cooler leaks on these diesels (subject of BMW's large EGR recall campaign) can pass coolant/deposit residue downstream, fouling the DPF and mimicking simple soot blockage.
  • ·Short urban journeys prevent the F30's active regeneration completing, producing the classic repeated-regen, rising-backpressure pattern on 318d/320d commuter cars.
