P2463 — DPF Soot Accumulation Too High

Soot load has exceeded the threshold at which the ECU will attempt or allow regeneration. The engine typically limits power to protect itself. This is the classic 'filter genuinely full' code — but why it filled matters more than the code itself.

What commonly causes it

  • ·Repeated interrupted regenerations (short urban journeys, stop-start duty)
  • ·Injector or EGR faults raising soot production faster than regens can burn it
  • ·Failed regen components: glow plugs, pressure sensor, temperature sensors
  • ·Ash accumulation leaving too little capacity for normal soot cycling

Test this before blaming the DPF

  • ·Regeneration history and completion rate via diagnostics — a van that never finishes a regen has a duty-cycle problem, not just a filter problem
  • ·Check for injector/EGR faults that raise soot output before cleaning anything
  • ·Confirm soot vs ash split if the tooling reports it — ash never burns off

Will cleaning fix it?

Yes, in the majority of structurally sound cases — bench cleaning removes both the soot a forced regen can't safely burn and the ash no regen can ever remove. But if the root cause (injectors, EGR, duty cycle) isn't addressed, the code will return.
